About Birth Centers
A Birth Center is a specialized facility focused on facilitating birth in the midwifery and wellness model. Here at Beginnings Birth Center, we are dedicated to providing you with a safe, relaxing, and comfortable atmosphere. We strive to help you meet your goals and give birth to your baby in the way that you choose.
Maybe you are considering a home birth rather than a hospital delivery but still aren’t entirely certain which is right for you. Our Birth Center is a great option to consider! The Birth Center can provide you with comfort and flexibility including water birth services.
Our certified nurse midwives and registered nurses will take care of you through every stage of your pregnancy, delivery, and recovery. You have access to a variety of luxury amenities to help you during your delivery process, including spa-like birthing suites and even custom waterbirth tubs. At the birth center, you also have the option of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, as a tool to help through labor.
Alongside our variety of pregnancy and birthing services, we will also work closely with you to ensure that you receive the unique and personalized care that you deserve. Every single aspect of your health, history, family, and lifestyle will be taken into account. This personalized service allows us to provide you with the high-quality care that you and your family deserve!
If you ever have any questions or concerns along the way, we will gladly take all the time that is necessary to discuss the options with you and make recommendations according to your unique needs.

During your pregnancy, you’re nurturing your baby inside you. Because of this, your body is also going through a lot of changes. You will receive regular checkups during which we discuss these changes and get to know you and your family. There are many ways that our nurse-midwife services are helpful during pregnancy. We will discuss any questions or concerns that you may have and talk about things you can expect on the part of pregnancy you’re in. These visits allow us to discuss changes to your lifestyle or birth plan when needed. We give you information during these visits so that you can make decisions about what you want during your care for yourself and your family. We talk about which classes to take, how to choose a doula, and how to plan for the birth and postpartum time.
We have you get in touch with us as soon as you think labor could be starting. Once labor is definite and established, our nurse-midwife on call meets you and the rest of your birth team at the center to get you settled in for the birth. We’ll get your and baby’s vital signs frequently and ensure we have everything needed at hand. Our registered nurses join us close to the time of birth. You can use any of the tools available in your birth suite – birth balls, the squatting and support sling, the birth stool, the shower, the adjustable bed, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if you need it, and/or the spacious built-in tub with hand shower and with as much warm water as you need for as long as you need it.
At this stage, you have given birth and your and your family are enjoying these special bonding moments.
Immediately after the birth – We will check on your and baby’s vital signs frequently a few times to ensure everyone is making the transition well. We leave the baby skin to skin with you and get you over to the bed to lie down if you weren’t already there. While we await the delivery of the placenta, we check to see if there are any lacerations that require repair. We use numbing medicine to do stitches if needed, and frequently during that time, the placenta is also born. The placenta goes in a bag next to you while the baby is still skin to skin with you, uninterrupted. As soon as the baby starts showing feeding cues, we can assist if needed for that first latch. At the birth center, our adjustable beds make it easy to get into a good position for feeding the baby – we’ll bring the head of the bed up to your comfort level.
Once baby has had the first full feeding, we’ll do the baby’s first exam next to you on the bed. We’ll get all baby’s vital signs including weight and length at that time. We will make a keepsake birth certificate with footprints as well. As soon as we’re wrapping that up, we’ll have you get up to the bathroom to get a little cleaned up and attempt to use the bathroom. Then we’ll get one more set of vital signs and go over the highlights of your instructions. At the birth center, you’ll go home approximately 4 hours after the birth – to your own bed.
You will be able to recover from your delivery in the most comfortable location of all – your home! We will be available by call or text for any questions or concerns. The first postpartum visit for both you and baby will be 24-48 hours after the birth. We will perform a physical exam on you and your baby, as well as answer any questions you may have. We can complete testing that the baby needs at that time as well. The next visit is at 4-6 days. Again, we’ll do a physical exam, perform baby’s hearing screen, and talk about how the adjustment to the new baby is going. We do another visit for you both at 2 weeks postpartum. This is usually the last time we see the baby for newborn care. After the lab results for the test we do for the baby at the 2-week visit come back, we will send all baby’s records to your pediatric/family provider for all baby’s care to continue with them from that point. We usually suggest you call your baby’s provider’s office after the 2-week visit to schedule the one-month well baby check. There is then a 6-week postpartum visit for you-you’re always welcome to bring the baby (and other kids) too. We’ll talk about planning future pregnancies, or avoid them if that’s desired; and return to sex, work, and exercise.
We’ll discuss at your 6-week postpartum visit when you’re due for your annual exam as well and can often get that scheduled a few months or so after the 6-week postpartum visit. We can continue to provide your care and are always happy to continue to see you on your journey!

“We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong.” – Laura Stavoe Harm
Let’s be straight from the start, the thought of a home birth scared the crap out of me. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to birth (or I was)
